What a guild is in an MMORPG, and how guilds work in Ancient Online: Remastered: founding, ranks, guild level, guild skills, guild war and ranking.

In an MMORPG, a guild is the group you stay with long after a hunt is over. This guide answers "what is a guild in an MMORPG?" and shows how the guild system and guild war work in Ancient Online: Remastered, including what is still in development.

Ancient Online: Remastered is in development; it is currently in closed alpha and no release date has been announced. The systems described here may change before launch.

What is a guild in an MMORPG?

A guild is a permanent, player-run community inside the game. It has a name, a leader, a member list and its own chat. A party is temporary: you form it for a hunt and it breaks up afterwards. A guild stays: it is the people you log in for, plan with and go to war with.

The word comes from history, where a guild was an association of craftsmen or merchants of one trade. In games, players with a common goal join forces and build something none of them could build alone. New to the genre? Our MMORPG glossary explains the other basic terms.

How do you found, join and leave a guild?

Guilds are founded at the Guardian, the guard who stands in each empire's village.

  • Founding: You need at least level 40 and 200,000 Tael. Guild names are unique, and you cannot found a guild while you belong to another. The founder becomes the guild leader.
  • Joining: A member whose rank allows it invites you, and you accept. Joining has no level requirement. You can block guild invitations in the game settings.
  • Member limit: A new guild has room for 32 members, and every guild level adds 2 more places.
  • Leaving: A member leaves through the Guardian of their own empire. The leader cannot just leave: they first hand over leadership or disband the guild.

Ranks and permissions

A guild has 15 ranks. The leader holds the first rank, and new members start at the lowest. Only the leader can rename ranks and move members between them. For every rank the leader switches four permissions on or off:

  1. Inviting new members.
  2. Removing members.
  3. Writing notices on the guild board.
  4. Using guild skills.

While a guild is at war, nobody can join it and no member can be removed.

Guild level and guild skills

A guild grows with experience its members donate. In the guild window a member chooses how much of their own experience to give; it leaves the character, and every 100 points donated add 1 point to the guild's experience. The highest guild level is 20, and every new level brings one skill point, two more member places and a larger energy pool.

Guild skills run on that shared guild energy. Members refill it with Tael, at 100 Tael per point; the pool holds 400 points at guild level 1 and 100 more for every level after that. The leader spends skill points to raise the skills, up to level 7 each. Six guild skills are active today:

  • For the guild: higher maximum HP, higher maximum SP, stronger defence, and faster movement and attack speed for the guild members online on the same channel.
  • For the user: a higher chance of critical hits and a faster casting speed, only for the member who uses the skill.

Guild skills can only be used during a guild war, and only by members whose rank has the skill permission. A use costs more energy the higher the skill level is, up to 300 points, and each skill then has a cooldown of 8 to 10 minutes.

Guild war: how it works

The full PvP rules are in our open-world PvP guide; here is what concerns guilds:

  • Declaring war: A guild leader declares war on another guild, and the war begins when the leader of the other guild accepts.
  • Open-field guild war: Once the war is on, members of the two guilds can fight each other in the open world, whatever their PvP mode is. This overrides new player protection as well; safe zones still apply.
  • No penalty: Kills in a guild war cost no Ranking Points, and members of the enemy guild appear with pink names.
  • Duration: An open-field guild war ends by itself one hour after it begins.

Guild ranking

Guild members can check the ranking at the Guardian: the eight highest-ranked guilds, the guilds around their own, and their own guild's score. The list is ordered by guild points. How guild points are earned, for example how the results of a guild war count, is still in development.

Guilds and empires

All members of a guild come from the same empire, because only players of your own empire can be invited. Rival empires can already fight each other in the open world, so a guild war matters most between two guilds of the same empire: it lets them fight as whole guilds, whatever each member's PvP mode is. How the empires differ is explained in the empire guide.

What a guild adds to everyday play

Most days a guild is not about war. Guild chat keeps the group in touch, guild members have their own group in the friends list, and the guild board holds the notices everyone needs to see. Guild mates team up for hunts, raise the guild level together and prepare for the next war.

In development: war maps, alliances and castle sieges

Guild wars fought on a separate war map, guild alliances and castle sieges are the targeted parts of large-scale PvP, and they are still in development. Their rules are not final, so we do not describe them here; we will publish them on this blog when they are ready.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a guild and a party?

A party is a temporary group for a hunt. A guild is permanent, with a name, a leader, ranks, its own chat and its own level.

What level do I need to found a guild?

Level 40, and you also need 200,000 Tael. Joining an existing guild has no level requirement.

Can I join a guild from another empire?

No. Guild invitations only work between players of the same empire.

Can guild power be bought with real money?

No. Guild levels come from experience donated by members, guild energy is refilled with Tael earned in the game, and the shop never sells combat power. The details are in our no pay-to-win post.
