What Is Ancient Online: Remastered? A Classic Eastern MMORPG Built in Unreal Engine 5.8
Ancient Online: Remastered is a classic Eastern MMORPG built in Unreal Engine 5.8: rival empires, open-world PvP and characters that grow through effort.
Ancient Online: Remastered is a classic Eastern fantasy MMORPG set in a world of rival empires, open-world battles and characters that grow with patience. Astronaut Entertainment, an independent studio founded in Türkiye, is building this new indie MMORPG in Unreal Engine 5.8 for desktop and mobile; it will be free to play. This post answers three questions: what the game offers, what it does differently, and where development stands today.
Ancient Online: Remastered is in development and no release date has been announced. The systems described here reflect the development build and may change before launch.
What does the game offer?
- Three empires: Shinsoo, Chunjo and Jinno. The banner you choose decides which players are your allies and which are your rivals.
- Six classes: Warrior, Ninja, Sura, Shaman, Lycan and Artemisia, each with its own weapons and skills.
- Characters that grow through effort: Levels, gear and reputation are earned in the game. The maximum level is 99, there are no seasonal resets, and no power layers will be added that cheapen your effort; we explain why in our design pledge.
- A player economy: You trade with Tael, the in-game currency. With the offline market, your shop keeps selling while you are away from the game.
- Guilds and PvP: Found a guild, fight guild wars, duel other players and run into rival empires out in the open world.
To get to know the classes, read the character classes guide; for picking a banner, see the guide to choosing an empire.
What does Unreal Engine 5.8 change?
The game client is built on Unreal Engine 5.8. That lets us keep the classic gameplay while building the world with today's technology:
- Dynamic weather and seasons: Rain, thunderstorms, fog, snow and sandstorms. Snow settles on the ground, and characters and surfaces get wet in the rain.
- A day and night cycle: A moving sun and moon, and a starry night sky.
- Scalable visuals: Optional Lumen lighting, plus TSR, DLSS and FSR upscaling.
We describe how the world comes alive in our post on dynamic weather, seasons and the day and night cycle.
The server makes the rules
We write the game server ourselves. The server decides the outcome of movement and combat; the player's computer or phone only shows what the server reports. This makes life harder for cheating clients that try to set their own position or damage, and it means everyone plays by the same rules.
One world on PC and mobile
Ancient Online: Remastered is designed so that PC and mobile players meet in the same world. The target platforms are Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS; the development build is currently tested on Windows and Android devices. Phones get their own touch interface (a joystick that appears under your thumb, an attack button you hold to keep hitting, tap-to-target), and gamepads are supported on PC. Details are in the PC and mobile cross-platform guide.
No pay-to-win
Our rule is simple: you cannot buy power with real money. The in-game shop only offers costumes, appearances and convenience items, and none of them grant combat power, experience or in-game currency. We explain point by point how this rule is enforced in our no pay-to-win post.
Your account lives inside the game
There is no login or sign-up form on the website. You create your account with your email address on the game's login screen, and you turn on two-step verification (2FA) inside the game as well. The step-by-step walkthrough is in the account creation and security guide.
Play in your own language
The game and the official website target 30 languages: Turkish, English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian, Hungarian, Czech, Danish, Russian, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Latin American Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Ukrainian, Greek, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Bulgarian, Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian. So that players who speak different languages can understand each other, chat messages are translated into the reader's language by a translation system running on our own servers.
