Old School MMORPG: What Ancient Online: Remastered Keeps from the Classic Formula and What It Modernises

What makes an old school MMORPG, and which parts of the classic formula Ancient Online: Remastered keeps or modernises on PC and mobile.

A classic MMORPG is defined less by its release year than by a way of playing: everyone shares one world, characters grow slowly but surely, players set the value of items, and rival sides meet out in the open. This post explains what makes an old school MMORPG and what Ancient Online: Remastered keeps from that tradition and what it renews.

Ancient Online: Remastered is in development; it is currently in closed alpha and no release date has been announced. The systems described here may change before launch.

What makes an MMORPG "old school"?

There is no official definition, but players who look for a classic MMORPG usually mean the same handful of things:

  • An open world: One shared world where you travel, hunt and run into other players, rather than a chain of separate rooms.
  • A character that grows with patience: Levels come slowly, and the grind is part of the journey rather than a chore to skip.
  • A player economy: Players set the prices; you trade face to face and sell from your own stall.
  • Risky upgrades: Making an item stronger can fail, and failure costs you something.
  • Rival factions and open-world PvP: The banner you choose decides who your allies and your enemies are.
  • Community and guilds: You need other people, and the friends you make are what keep you in the game.
  • No hand-holding: The game does not walk you to every answer; you learn the world by exploring it and by asking other players.
  • Progress that lasts: No level cap that keeps rising and no seasonal resets that wipe your character.

What do old school MMORPG players look for today?

Most players looking for an old school MMORPG today are not after old graphics but after the feeling of that era: effort that counts, a world shared with other people and a character that stays yours for years. What they do not want is just as clear: power sold for money, gear that loses its value with every update, and a game that only starts to matter at the maximum level.

What does Ancient Online: Remastered keep from the classic formula?

Ancient Online: Remastered is a classic Eastern fantasy MMORPG, and its core systems follow the classic formula:

  • Level 99 and no seasonal resets: The maximum level is 99, and the character you build stays with you. Why the cap is fixed is explained in our design pledge.
  • Three empires and open-world PvP: Shinsoo, Chunjo and Jinno are rivals in the open world, with safe zones, duels and guild wars; the rules are in the open-world PvP guide.
  • Six classes: Each class has its own weapons and skill paths.
  • Tael and the offline market: You trade in Tael, the in-game currency, and your market keeps selling while you are away.
  • Risky upgrades at the blacksmith: Every attempt has a cost, and a failed attempt destroys the item. How the economy works is in the player economy guide.
  • Soul stones in the hunting grounds: The soul stones you come across while hunting give drops of their own when you break them.
  • No pay-to-win: Power is not sold for real money; the shop only offers costumes, appearances and convenience items.

What does it modernise?

Keeping the classic approach does not mean keeping the old games' problems. For each area, the table shows what stays the same and what is new:

AreaStays classicWhat is new
WorldOne open world shared by every playerPC and mobile players in the same world; weather, seasons and a day and night cycle
Combat and PvPThree rival empires, PvP in the open worldThe server decides the outcome of movement and combat, which makes cheating clients far less useful
EconomyTael, trading and the offline marketMarket search, a Watch List and the market average price
UpgradingRisky upgrades at the blacksmithThe Upgrade window shows the cost and the chance of success before you confirm
CommunityGuilds, duels and chatChat messages are translated into the reader's language
AccountA character that stays with you for yearsAn account created inside the game, protected with two-step verification (2FA)

Can you play a classic MMORPG on your phone?

That is the goal: a classic MMORPG for PC and mobile in one world. The target platforms are Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS; the development build is currently tested on Windows and Android devices. Phones get their own touch interface instead of a shrunk desktop screen: a joystick that appears under your thumb, an attack button you hold to keep hitting, and tap-to-target. Your account is not tied to a device, so the same character goes with you from your computer to your phone. Details are in the PC and mobile cross-platform guide.

What does "Remastered" mean here?

"Remastered" describes our approach: we are rebuilding the idea of a classic empire MMORPG with modern technology. The client is built in Unreal Engine 5.8, we write the game server ourselves, and rules such as the level 99 cap and no power for sale are fixed from the start. The full picture of the game is in What is Ancient Online: Remastered?

Where does it stand today?

Ancient Online: Remastered is in closed alpha, and no release date has been announced. During the closed alpha you need an access key to create a new account and to download the game from the Download the Game page, and keys are not for sale. How it works is explained in the closed alpha guide. The game will be free to play.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ancient Online: Remastered an old school MMORPG?

Yes, in the sense players usually mean: one open world, three rival empires, a maximum level of 99 with no seasonal resets, a player economy and power that is earned, not bought. The technology underneath is modern.

Is there a lot of grind?

Progress takes time, and that is a deliberate choice: levels and gear are earned by playing, and nothing that makes a character stronger is for sale. We do not quote rates here, because they may be tuned before launch.

Can I play it on Android?

The development build is currently tested on Android devices, and Android is one of the target platforms. Minimum and recommended specs are on the system requirements page.

Is it free?

Yes. Ancient Online: Remastered will be free to play, and power is not sold for real money; the rules are in our no pay-to-win post.
